SARINDA - Stringed instrument Found mostly in the Northern states of India, the sarinda (saringda) is a variant or at least similar to the sarangi. The instrument is played by fingering (sliding) the main strings with the nails of the index, middle and fourth (ring) fingers while using the 'underhand' technique for bowing the strings with the right hand. It is not uncommon to see tiny bells fixed to the end or the length of the body of the bow and even around the wrist of the musicians. There are three or four main strings though simple forms of this instrument are fitted with just one string. It also has far fewer sympathetic strings than the sarangi. This instrument also, is fitted with an animal (goat) skin spread tautly over the resonating section. |
